A high-altitude adventure blending colonial charm, a grueling overnight volcano trek, and luxury relaxation on the shores of the world's most beautiful lake.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 · Colonial History & Volcanic Vistas
Morning — Arrive in Antigua and settle into a luxury boutique hotel like Casa Santo Domingo. Start with a private walking tour of the colonial ruins and local markets.
Afternoon — Walk the cobblestone streets to the Santa Catalina Arch and climb the Hill of the Cross (Cerro de la Cruz) for a panoramic view of the Agua Volcano and the city grid.
Evening — Enjoy high-end Guatemalan fusion at Welten or Hector's Bistro, then grab a local craft beer at Antigua Brewing Co. with volcano views from the roof.
💡 Download the 'Antigua' offline map; the street numbering system can be tricky for newcomers.
Day 2 · The Great Acatenango Ascent
Morning — Begin the strenuous 5-6 hour hike up Acatenango Volcano. This is a bucket-list mountain trek reaching nearly 4,000 meters.
Afternoon — Mid-day picnic at the base camp. Continue the ascent to the high camp. Watch the sunset above the clouds as neighboring Fuego Volcano erupts in the distance.
Evening — Camp overnight on the volcano. Dinner is served by guides around a campfire while watching glowing lava flows under the stars.
💡 Rent high-quality cold-weather gear from your tour operator; it gets freezing at the summit.
Day 3 · Summit Sunrise and Recovery
Morning — Summit push for sunrise views of the entire volcanic chain. Enjoy breakfast at the peak before beginning the descent back to the trailhead.
Afternoon — Descent of the volcano (approx. 3 hours). Return to Antigua for a much-needed professional sports massage to recover from the hike.
Evening — Casual dinner at Rincón Típico for authentic roasted chicken, followed by an early night to recover from the trek.
💡 If you're feeling adventurous, add a 'lava tour' to walk closer to the active Fuego vents if conditions allow.
Day 4 · Road Trip to Lake Atitlán
Morning — Pick up your rental 4x4 or hire a private driver for a scenic road trip through the highlands toward Lake Atitlán, stopping at the local market in Sololá.
Afternoon — Arrive in Panajachel and take a private boat to your luxury lakefront hotel in Santa Cruz or Jaitibalto. Relax by the infinity pool overlooking the three volcanoes.
Evening — Dine at the hotel's terrace. The view of the lake under a full moon is world-class. Local wine and fresh bass (Pez Blanco) are highlights.
💡 The road from Panajachel to Santa Catarina Palopó is incredibly scenic for photos.
Day 5 · Trails and Tribal Villages
Morning — Hike the 'Lower Mayan Trail' from Santa Cruz to San Marcos. This cliffside trail offers the best lake views and passes through remote indigenous villages.
Afternoon — Kayak or Paddleboard in the afternoon when the 'Xocomil' wind picks up. Afterward, take a private boat to San Juan La Laguna to see the textile co-ops and art galleries.
Evening — Dinner at El Indigo in San Marcos for a bohemian, healthy meal overlooking the water.
💡 Jump off the 'trampoline' platform in San Marcos into the crystal clear lake water.
Day 6 · Indian Nose Peaks & Coffee
Morning — Rise early for the Indian Nose (Rostro Maya) hike. It’s a short but steep climb for the most iconic sunrise view over the entire Lake Atitlan caldera.
Afternoon — Explore the spiritual village of San Marcos or take a private coffee plantation tour in San Pedro to see the mountain-to-cup process.
Evening — Farewell dinner in Panajachel at Casablanca, then enjoy live music at one of the bars on Calle Santander.
💡 Hire a local guide for Indian Nose to ensure you are on the correct path for the best viewpoint.
Day 7 · Highland Farewells
Morning — Take the scenic drive back to Guatemala City. Stop at a roadside 'comedor' for a final traditional breakfast of eggs, beans, and fried plantains.
Afternoon — Last-minute shopping for jade jewelry or hand-woven textiles in the city center before heading to GUA airport.
Evening — Departure from La Aurora International Airport (GUA).
💡 Leave the lake at least 6 hours before your flight to account for unpredictable highland traffic.
