Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 · Arrival and Alpine Biking in Banff

Morning — Arrive in Calgary, pick up your rental SUV, and drive the 90 minutes to Banff. Check into your hotel and walk Tunnel Mountain Drive for a panoramic overlook of the town and Mount Rundle.

Afternoon — Rent a mountain bike and ride the scenic Legacy Trail to Canmore. Enjoy the valley views and stop for a sandwich at Rocky Mountain Bagel Co. before riding back.

Evening — Soak sore muscles at the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Follow it up with a hearty bison burger and local craft beer at Bear Street Tavern.

💡 Park your car at the hotel and walk; parking in Banff central is limited and expensive.

Day 2 · Glistening Lakes and Alpine Tea

Morning — Drive early to Lake Louise. Rent a canoe to paddle the turquoise waters before the crowds peak. The morning light on the mountains is unmatched.

Afternoon — Hike to the Lake Agnes Teahouse for a snack. If you have energy, continue to the Plain of Six Glaciers trail for incredible views of the Victoria Glacier.

Evening — Drive to nearby Moraine Lake (shuttle required) for the 'Blue Hour.' Dinner at Bill Peyto's Cafe in Lake Louise Village, a local favorite for its laid-back vibe.

💡 Book your Parks Canada shuttle to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise months in advance.

Day 3 · Heading North on Icefields Parkway

Morning — Hike the Helen Lake Trail (12km). It’s a challenging ascent through alpine meadows frequently visited by marmots and occasionally grizzlies.

Afternoon — Start the drive up the Icefields Parkway. Stop at Mistaya Canyon and Bow Lake. These are short walks with high visual payoff. Over-night near Saskatchewan River Crossing.

Evening — Enjoy a quiet evening stargazing. The lack of light pollution on the Parkway makes for one of the best night skies in Canada.

💡 Download offline maps; there is zero cell service on most of the Icefields Parkway.

Day 4 · Glaciers and Giant Waterfalls

Morning — Cross into Jasper National Park. Experience the Columbia Icefield with a guided 'Ice Walk' (on foot with crampons) rather than the big buses for a more athletic experience.

Afternoon — Visit the Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls. Explore the town of Jasper and grab a casual dinner at Jasper Brewing Co.

Evening — Take the Jasper SkyTram for a sunset view over the Athabasca Valley. It’s the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada.

💡 The glacier is significantly colder than the road; pack an extra windproof layer.

Day 5 · Southern Return and Wildflower Meadows

Morning — Hike the Cavell Meadows Trail in Jasper for views of the Angel Glacier. It’s a steep climb but the wildflower display (in season) is world-class.

Afternoon — Drive back south toward Banff, stopping at any viewpoints missed on the way up. Check into a lodge in the Johnston Canyon area.

Evening — Dine at the Post Hotel in Lake Louise for an upscale mountain meal, or stick to the Station Restaurant (a converted railway station).

💡 Gas up in Jasper; there is only one (expensive) station between Jasper and Lake Louise.

Day 6 · Canyons and Via Ferrata Climbing

Morning — Hike the Johnston Canyon to the Ink Pots. The early start avoids the heavy crowds at the lower waterfalls and leads to gorgeous cold-water springs.

Afternoon — For a 'sports' fix, try the Mt. Norquay Via Ferrata. It’s an assisted climbing route that offers high-altitude thrills with safety cables.

Evening — Farewell dinner at The Bison Restaurant in Banff, featuring seasonal, locally sourced Alberta ingredients.

💡 Start the Johnston Canyon hike by 7:30 AM to beat the tour buses.

Day 7 · River Walks and Calgary Return

Morning — Enjoy a final brunch at Wild Flour Bakery. Take a quick walk along the Bow River Trail for some last photos of the mountains.

Afternoon — Drive back to Calgary. If time permits, stop at Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary near Cochrane for an educational tour. Drop off rental car and depart.

Evening — Fly home from Calgary International Airport.

💡 Check flight times carefully; Calgary airport is roughly 2 hours from Banff.
