Durmitor National Park & Kotor 🇲🇪
"Dramatic limestone massifs meeting the deep blue Adriatic fjords."
For a 6-day road trip, you can drive from the coast up into the Dinaric Alps. While Durmitor will be snowy in February (great for snowshoeing and winter photography), the coastal mountains near Kotor offer milder hiking opportunities with spectacular sea views.
A dramatic journey from the rugged limestone peaks and glacial lakes of the north to the sun-soaked Venetian stone towns and blue waters of the Adriatic coast.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 · Ascent to the Alpine Highlands
Morning — Arrive at Podgorica Airport, pick up a rental car, and begin the scenic 2.5-hour drive north through the Moraca River Canyon.
Afternoon — Drive or bus north toward Zabljak, the gateway to Durmitor. Stop briefly at the Tara River Bridge, a concrete arch marvel 172 meters above the river canyon. Check into your guesthouse and breathe the alpine air.
Evening — Walk into Zabljak town center for a hearty 'cicvara' (cornmeal and cheese) dinner at a local konoba to fuel up for hiking.
💡 Stock up on snacks at a supermarket in Podgorica; mountain prices are higher.
Day 2 · Glacial Lakes of Durmitor
Morning — Walk from Zabljak to Crno Jezero (Black Lake). Embark on the 4km easy loop around the perimeter with the Medjed peak reflecting in the glacial water.
Afternoon — Continue the hike to Zminje Jezero (Snake Lake), hidden deep in the spruce forest, offering a more secluded and mystical atmosphere than the main lake.
Evening — Relax at a local mountain lodge; try the 'ispod saca' (slow-roasted meat under a metal lid).
💡 National Park entry is €5 per person; keep your ticket for the whole day.
Day 3 · The Peak of Montenegro
Morning — The big hike: Bobotov Kuk. Drive to Sedlo pass to start the trail. This is a demanding 6-7 hour trek through limestone karst landscapes.
Afternoon — Reach the summit for a 360-degree view of the Dinaric Alps. If time permits, visit the Ledena Pecina (Ice Cave) on the descent to see year-round ice stalactites.
Evening — Head back to Zabljak early to rest your legs; grab a local beer and pizza at Oro.
💡 Do not attempt Bobotov Kuk in bad weather; clouds move fast here.
Day 4 · The Great Mountain Descent
Morning — Drive the 'Durmitor Ring' road toward Pluzine, a stunning high-altitude route with dramatic cliffs and grazing sheep.
Afternoon — Descent toward the coast. Stop at the Ostrog Monastery, a stunning white building carved into a vertical cliff face, before arriving in the Bay of Kotor.
Evening — Take a sunset stroll along the Muo waterfront for a view across the bay to the illuminated Old Town walls.
💡 Check your brake pads before descending the P1 hairpin bends toward Kotor.
Day 5 · Fjords and Fortresses
Morning — Beat the heat and the cruise ship crowds by climbing the 1,350 steps to the Castle of San Giovanni for the iconic fjord view.
Afternoon — Wander the car-free marble streets of the Old Town. Visit the Saint Tryphon Cathedral and the Maritime Museum. Enjoy a gelato in a hidden piazza.
Evening — Seafood dinner by the water. Try 'black risotto' (squid ink) and local Vranac wine.
💡 Start the fortress climb before 8 AM to avoid the entry fee and the sun.
Day 6 · Venetian Charm on the Bay
Morning — Drive 20 minutes north to Perast, an impeccably preserved Venetian-era village. Explore the baroque palaces along the water.
Afternoon — Take a boat trip to 'Our Lady of the Rocks' island and the Blue Cave, or simply swim off the stone jetties in Perast.
Evening — Final sunset in Montenegro. Drive back to Podgorica (1.5h) for your evening flight or final night.
💡 Parking in Perast is restricted; park in the designated lot at either end of town.
