Durmitor National Park 🌲激
"Deep canyons and glacial lakes in Europe's last wild frontier."
Based in Žabljak, you can hike to the Black Lake or conquer Bobotov Kuk. It is significantly more affordable than the Alps, allowing for luxury mountain chalets and private guided rafting in the Tara Canyon.
A high-altitude adventure focused on the jagged limestone peaks, glacial 'mountain eyes,' and the world's second-deepest canyon.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 · Arrival and the Glacial Lakes
Morning — Arrive in Zabljak, the gateway to Durmitor. Start with a visit to the National Park entrance and walk the paved path to Crno Jezero (Black Lake) to see the iconic reflection of Medjed peak.
Afternoon — Take the easy 4km walk around the perimeter of the Black Lake. For more views, hike the well-marked trail to Zminje Jezero (Snake Lake), which is much quieter and surrounded by dense spruce forest.
Evening — Enjoy a hearty mountain dinner at Restaurant Or'O in Zabljak, specializing in 'sac' (slow-roasted meat) and local cheeses.
💡 Buy the multi-day park pass if you plan to enter the park every day; it saves money over daily tickets.
Day 2 · High Peaks and Sedlo Pass
Morning — Drive the 'Durmitor Ring' south to the village of Virak. Stop at the Sedlo Pass (1,907m), the highest paved mountain pass in Montenegro, for a photo op of 'the saddle' rock formation.
Afternoon — Drive or take a local taxi to the trailhead for Prutaš (2,393m). This is one of the most scenic hikes, characterized by its unique vertical rock layers. The climb is steep but rewards you with views of the Skrka Lakes.
Evening — Head to Lupus for a casual atmosphere and a glass of Vranac, Montenegro’s signature red wine.
💡 The weather can change in minutes; always pack a high-quality windbreaker even if it's sunny.
Day 3 · River Canyons and High Bridges
Morning — Descend into the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. Join a half-day rafting trip from Splavište to Žugića Luka to experience the turquoise waters and waterfalls.
Afternoon — For a change of pace, drive 30 minutes to the Tara Bridge (Djurdjevica Tara). You can walk across the 172-meter high bridge or, for a thrill, take the Red Rock Zip Line across the canyon.
Evening — Return to Zabljak for dinner at Konoba Luna, a cozy spot known for traditional trout and mountain porridge (Kačamak).
💡 Rafting in Durmitor is generally Class II-III in summer, making it safe and scenic for all levels.
Day 4 · Conquering Bobotov Kuk and Ice Caves
Morning — The ultimate challenge: Hike Bobotov Kuk (2,523m), the highest peak in the massif. Start early from Sedlo to avoid the midday sun and potential afternoon thunderstorms.
Afternoon — Hike to the Ledena Pećina (Ice Cave) located below the peak of Obla Glava. Inside, you'll find natural ice stalagmites and stalactites that remain frozen even in mid-summer.
Evening — Final sunset view from the Curevac Viewpoint, which offers the most dramatic vertical drop into the Tara Canyon, before a final dinner in town.
💡 The final 20 minutes of the Bobotov Kuk climb involves fixed cables; bring gloves if you have sensitive hands.
